Highlighting Interesting Mailing List Discussions

August 13, 2008 - 6:00pm
Submitted by Jeremy on August 13, 2008 - 6:00pm.
KernelTrap

New functionality has been enabled that allows logged-in users to highlight interesting mailing list discussions. This new feature has been provided out of necessity, as I'm finding myself with insufficient time of late for keeping up with the many mailing lists I track to post articles on KernelTrap. My goal is to inspire you to participate more in the process, occasionally clicking the new up-arrow on mailing list messages that you find interesting and worthy of attention. In the upcoming weeks, improved interfaces will be provided for navigating other people's votes, and for filtering on only the mailing lists you're interested in. Future KernelTrap stories and quotes will be selected from those that are highlighted by this voting process.

Linux Job Board

Submitted by Jeremy on August 6, 2008 - 4:19pm.
Features

We have partnered with HotLinuxJobs to provide KernelTrap readers with a new Linux Job Board dedicated to helping you find employment in free and open source technologies. The list of jobs on our website will be automatically updated as new jobs come available, and can be found by clicking the 'Jobs' link in the menu at the top of every page. When you find a listed job that you're interested in, follow the link from the job board to sign up for the free Jobs Email List. A HotLinuxJobs recruiter will then personally work with you, interviewing your over the phone before sending your resume to the potential employer, and protecting your confidentiality. You may sign up for the Jobs Email List even if you currently find no matching jobs, and a HotLinuxJobs recruiter will contact you when a match is found. Their website explains:

"[HotLinuxJobs is a] search firm specializing in the placement of Linux / Open Source professionals, providing both contract and direct hire services to our clients. Our knowledge of the Linux / Open Source landscape and employment marketplace make us your most efficient recruiting resource. If you are looking for exciting opportunities and want to work for leading companies adopting Open Source technologies, please contact us and send us a copy of your resume and sign up for our jobs email list."

Linux news

User account creation has been temporarily disabled on KernelTrap.org due to account abuse by web spammers. I am working on a solution to automatically detect and block these spam accounts, but until I have time to finish the effort I will be leaving user accounts disabled. I apologize for the inconvenience.

KernelTrap

We've added new features to our mail archive search engine. Our new features allow you to search for messages from specific names and with specific words in the subject. You can also limit your search to specific specific years and/or months and/or days. Finally, we cleaned up a handful of bugs in our advanced search interface that were resulting in faulty results.

Searching the Mail Archives

KernelTrap

We have added full-text search functionality to our mailing list archives. A simple search block shows up along side each mail archive posting allowing you to search all mailing lists, or just the list that you're currently viewing. An advanced search page helps you craft more complex queries and to search multiple mailing lists at a time.

Searching is extremely fast thanks to the Sphinx search engine. Currently our search index is only updated once ever day, but we will soon improve it to update more frequently. Check the advanced search page to see as new features are enabled.

Linux Kernel Job Board

November 5, 2007 - 10:43am
Submitted by Jeremy on November 5, 2007 - 10:43am.
Linux news

I am pleased to announce that KernelTrap has partnered with Specialty Job Markets to offer a unique Linux kernel job board for our readers. It is completely free to submit your resume, which will then be personally reviewed and matched with current and future employment opportunities. If you're an employer, it's also free to post jobs. Jobs and resumes that are posted to our boards are individually reviewed and matched by a professional recruiter, not a computer program, offering quality results with a personal touch. The contact information you provide is kept confidential and is only visible to our dedicated recruiter.

By using our job board, you are not only finding yourself a good job or a good employee, you're also helping to support KernelTrap.org. Each time our recruiter successfully matches a candidate with a job, the employer pays a fee for this service, and KernelTrap.org receives a percentage which allows us to focus on improving these web pages. With every single resume and job manually screened by a human recruiter, we are able to keep our job board focused on kernel development jobs and free of spam. Read on for full details, or skip ahead and submit your resume today!

The past few days have been a little rough. To begin, all KernelTrap configuration files were moved into a configuration management system, but in doing so many of the configuration files inadvertently got modified. These issues were fixed as they were noticed.

At this time, we are actively archiving multiple Linux, OpenBSD, DragonFlyBSD, FreeBSD, and NetBSD mailing lists. In addition to providing a simple online browsing interface, we also provide multiple RSS feeds for each of our archived mailing lists.

Submitted by Jeremy on July 9, 2007 - 7:58pm.
KernelTrap

The KernelTrap forums have been completely restructured and simplified. There are now four main sections, Linux, BSD, KernelTrap and Other. Please update your bookmarks.

Support for tagging has also been added to the forums (as well as to blogs). Thus, when posting a new forum topic to KernelTrap it's now possible to specify a comma separated list of tags that describe your posting. Popular tags will show up in the new block in the lower right corner of the page, as well as here.

Man pages

KernelTrap

I've added 3199 new pages to KernelTrap tonight, importing the Linux kernel man pages. I wrote a custom module that converts nroff format man pages into HTML on the fly, and another that imports the actual man pages from a tarball found on kernel.org. I've not yet finished an interface for browsing the man pages, but the pages will turn up in site-searches.

The KernelTrap server was upgraded last night to a Dell PowerEdge SC1435 which utilizes a Dual Core AMD Opteron 2212HE. The server was purchased using funds generated by the advertising displayed on these pages. Additional specifications can be found in the KernelTrap FAQ.

The server continues to be hosted by the Oregon State University's Open Source Lab [story].

KernelTrap: No Updates Into September, New Theme

August 15, 2006 - 10:23am
Submitted by Jeremy on August 15, 2006 - 10:23am.
KernelTrap

I'm unable to add content to KernelTrap for the next two or three weeks, as I'm in the middle of a move. Once settled down into my new home, I hope to find much more time for KernelTrap than I've had in recent months.

I recently hired Trae McCombs, founder of themes.org and linux.com, to give KernelTrap an improved look. The theme is not completely finished yet, but is ready to be previewed. I don't expect everyone to like the new look, but would be interested in hearing about any technical problems people may run into it so we can get them resolved before the new theme goes live. Drupal has been upgraded from 4.5 on the live site to 4.7 on the new site. Please leave any comments about the new site here, or drop me an email.

KernelTrap: AdSense Revenue Sharing

January 19, 2006 - 3:03pm
Submitted by Jeremy on January 19, 2006 - 3:03pm.
KernelTrap

KernelTrap is now offering AdSense revenue sharing on a trial basis. To participate, you will first need a Google AdSense account (follow the link within if you do not already have an AdSense account). Next, you will need to create a KernelTrap user account and enter your publically viewable google_ad_client ID. Finally, contribute original and relevant content to KernelTrap, and 80% of the profits generated will be automatically credited to your AdSense account. This applies to new forum postings, as well as personal blogs. Inapproriate or otherwise not relevant content will be removed, and the offending user accounts will be blocked. This is a new program that I am doing on a trial basis, if you have any problems with funds not appearing in your AdSense account please send an email to jeremy@kerneltrap.org and I will help track down the problem so that future funds are properly credited to your account. The goal is to encourage submission of useful original content related to kernel development -- if instead this leads to the contribution of useless or offtopic posts, the program will be canceled.

I'll be completely offline for the rest of the month, and thus unable to make updates to KernelTrap [blog]. I am currently displaying the ten most recently updated forum discussions on the front age. Please help out by submitting relevant kernel articles into the appropriate forum. I'm continuing to search for ways to further liven these web pages during stretches that I personally have limited time. Discussion on related ideas is welcome here.
