Root password

Hi All,
I want to change my root password permenantly. I have done it by changing the entry of the password file. But its not accepting more then 8 characters. Can any one please mention me , How to increase the length from 8-16 characters ?

There was a weird limit of 8 chars length passwords.

From Google:

"By default, SUSE Linux won’t accept passwords with more than eight characters. If this limitation doesn’t bother you, type a password into the box and click the Next button. If you would like to use a longer password, click the Expert Options button and select a different (?)."
