Linus recently returned from a two week vacation, announcing the release of "a largish 2.5.8-pre1 patch". Following the announcement, he commented on the earlier April Fool's message [0]. He says, "PS. For people who still haven't noticed - the "I'm leaving Linux and Transmeta" email was a April fools joke (and not written by me, btw, so don't credit me for being funny)".
The large patch includes a number of merges, including some that "are known incomplete (eg some drivers do not compile etc)". You can browse the current 2.5 tree [1] online. Details follow.

Ok, there's a largish 2.5.8-pre1 patch out there in testing right now.
It syncs up with various sources over the last two weeks - notably USB,
networking, sparc, net drivers, and the beginning of the -dj tree merge.
Some of the merges are known incomplete (eg some drivers do not compile
etc), but testing is always a good idea.
Changelog appended.
