A frustrated sounding Andrew Morton released the 2.6.23-rc6-mm1 kernel as "a 29MB diff against 2.6.23-rc6." Many patches are merged first into Andrew's -mm tree for testing before being pushed to Linus' mainline tree during the merge window. Andrew suggested that the -mm process wasn't working as well as it could:
"It took me over two solid days to get this lot compiling and booting on a few boxes. This required around ninety fixup patches and patch droppings. There are several bugs in here which I know of (details below) and presumably many more which I don't know of. I have to say that this just isn't working any more."
From: Andrew Morton <akpm@...> Subject: 2.6.23-rc6-mm1 Date: Sep 18, 4:18 am 2007 ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/akpm/patches/2.6/2.6.23-rc6/2.6.23-rc6-mm... 2.6.23-rc6-mm1 is a 29MB diff against 2.6.23-rc6. It took me over two solid days to get this lot compiling and booting on a few boxes. This required around ninety fixup patches and patch droppings. There are several bugs in here which I know of (details below) and presumably many more which I don't know of. I have to say that this just isn't working any more. - The Vaio hangs when quitting X due to x86_64-mm-cpa-clflush.patch, but I didn't drop that patch because the iommu patch series depends on it. - The Vaio also hangs during resume-from-RAM, due to git-acpi.patch - And it hangs during suspend-to-RAM, due to git-acpi.patch - Huge churn in networking. Many wireless drivers will be busted, and b44.c has been disabled altogether. If you need b44, then good luck working out what was done to it. - Added Peter's writeback balancing changes. Might help people who are seeing large latency during heavy writeback. - Major changes in the basically-unmaintained IPC code. Needs careful testing and reviewing. - Matthias fixed the mm-to-git importer, so the below-referenced git tree should hopefully be working again. - Pleeeeeze do try to cc the appropriate developer(s) and mailing lists when reporting problems, thanks. Boilerplate: - See the `hot-fixes' directory for any important updates to this patchset. - To fetch an -mm tree using git, use (for example) git-fetch git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/smurf/linux-trees.git tag v2.6.16-rc2-mm1 git-checkout -b local-v2.6.16-rc2-mm1 v2.6.16-rc2-mm1 - -mm kernel commit activity can be reviewed by subscribing to the mm-commits mailing list. echo "subscribe mm-commits" | mail majordomo@vger.kernel.org - If you hit a bug in -mm and it is not obvious which patch caused it, it is most valuable if you can perform a bisection search to identify which patch introduced the bug. Instructions for this process are at http://www.zip.com.au/~akpm/linux/patches/stuff/bisecting-mm-trees.txt But beware that this process takes some time (around ten rebuilds and reboots), so consider reporting the bug first and if we cannot immediately identify the faulty patch, then perform the bisection search. - When reporting bugs, please try to Cc: the relevant maintainer and mailing list on any email. - When reporting bugs in this kernel via email, please also rewrite the email Subject: in some manner to reflect the nature of the bug. Some developers filter by Subject: when looking for messages to read. - Occasional snapshots of the -mm lineup are uploaded to ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/akpm/mm/ and are announced on the mm-commits list. It's Greg's turn. -

I need an explanation
Sorry, but I don't understand... he is comitting changes to _his_ -mm tree so if he thinks that new patches are breaking things... just _don't_ merge them!
If you think that the diff is too big, just drop some of the patches.
Where is the problem comming then?
Sounds like a style
Sounds like a style conflict. Andrew is more lenient at accepting patches, and thus accepts more patches. Linus does not accept patches so readily so Andrew gets a large backlog and the problems that follow. So either Andrew can accept less patches(his problem) or he can complain about it publicly in hopes that Linus accepts more patches(Linus' problem). Sounds like he's doing the latter.
The amount of patches is not
The amount of patches is not problematic per se. The problem is that the current crop of patches in the mm-queue are in a very bad state. Thus Andrew complains. Some people seem to think that -mm is a playground (and a means for improving) for patches of poor quality, but -mm is really supposed to be an experimental tree where patch submitters have at least tried to make their patches work to begin with. -mm
does provide immature patches a place where they can be reviewed and improved, but the patches should not be completely broken, as many of them are now - and there seems to be a truckload of regressions caused by
the patches. Therefore it's understandable that Andrew doesn't like the situation - he's not supposed to have to fix hundreds of totally broken patches full of regressions - the patch submitters should do a better job.
sorting and picking
can he not review them quickly? Lousy patches never go in, bad patches are sent back to the author and quirky patches are fixed only if it's valuable.
too many patches
There is just too many. And if he starts dropping patches people will complain loudly and create another -xx tree. I agree with andrew this is just not working anymore.
i dont think people will like it if andrew starts to raffle the patches and pick only the first 50.
I think this is true.
I think this is true. People submitting patches should run a few regressions and make sure things actually work before submitting their patches into -mm. It's understandable that things may not always work, but at least try to make them as stable as possible before submitting.
testing framework
i agree. people need to do a lot more testing on their own before submitting patches.
on the other hand if somebody can come up with a tree with an automatic integration framework that would be great. people can run that before submitting patches. or it could be centralized so everybody can see who broke the tree.
Seriously, he doesn't even
Seriously, he doesn't even use git. Can't git help in this process?
Andrew responds
Andrew offers more insight into the issue:
http://kerneltrap.org/mailarchive/linux-kernel/2007/9/18/263005
Microkernel?
Time to microkernelize Linux?
Such a thoughtless
Such a thoughtless comment,
did you think this up yourself
or did you need someones help to look cool?
Isn't the real cause the mainline 2.6.23?
Isn't the real cause for the 2.6.23-mm problems the fact that the mainline 2.6.23 seems to be staying open longer than normal, and getting more than normal churn? Keeping 2.6.23 mainline in the -rc series means that other patches are backing up, and that hits -mm. Is this really fallout from the scheduler churn?
